What is the BIIAB Level 2 NCDS?
If you want to work as a door steward in Scotland, after November 2007, you need to have a licence issued by the Security Industry Authority (SIA), which was set up by the government to regulate the private security industry, including door supervision. Without a licence, you can't legally work on the door of licensed premises.
To get an SIA licence you will need to satisfy three requirements:
-
pass an identity check
-
pass a criminal records check, and
-
possess a recognised door supervisor qualification.
What is the recognised qualification I need, if I don't already hold a door supervisor qualification?
Holding a recognised door supervisor qualification is part of the SIA's requirements to obtain a licence to practise. BIIAB offers the NCDS (Scotland). In order to achieve this qualification, learners must successfully complete two examinations:
- Unit 1 - Roles and Responsibilities of Door Supervisors
- Unit 2 - Conflict Management for Door Supervisors.
What is the recognised qualification I need, if I already hold a door supervisor qualification?
If you already hold a door supervisor qualification, you may be fully or partially exempt from taking the new qualification. Full details of exemptions can be found on the SIA website www.the-sia.org.uk within the table ‘Accreditation of Prior Learning’ or by calling the BIIAB QA department on 01276 684449.
Where can I take the qualification?
BIIAB has training centres all across Scotland, England and Wales which offer this qualification. Please click here to find your nearest BIIAB approved training centre.
The qualification consists of two units:
- Unit 1 - Roles and Responsibilities of Door Supervisors
This includes: admission policies and procedures, refusing entry, searching, seizing articles, eviction, use of force and offensive weapons, how to deal with incidents, studying relevant legislation and how to comply with the law, drugs, arrest, scene preservation and report writing. - Unit 2 - Conflict Management for Door Supervisors
This includes managing conflict by applying dynamic risk approaches, understanding the importance of self-awareness and acting proactively, how to defuse conflict by overcoming communication blocks, signalling non-aggression and managing high-risk situations, how to resolve conflict, and how to learn from conflict.
There are two examinations, one for each unit. Each examination will have 40 multiple-choice questions and will take one hour.
How long does the course take?
The course will take 15 hours per unit including the two examinations.
What are the entry requirements?
There is no specific experience or qualifications that you need in order to do this course.
Does the qualification form part of a recognised framework?
The qualification will be recognised by the SIA when you apply for a licence.
Are there learning materials available?
