What is the BIIAB SCAA?

The BIIAB SCAA was developed to help Government raise awareness of alcohol issues with children and young adults, and is a key part of the ground-breaking ‘BII Schools Project’.

The ‘BII Schools Project’ is a three-pronged initiative which includes a special website (www.theschoolsproject.co.uk ), quiz sheets, and the BIIAB SCAA.

The BIIAB SCAA meets the need for alcohol education in the Personal and Social Development (PSD) area of school curriculum, as well as giving those who successfully pass the examination, a nationally recognised Certificate.

Who is the BIIAB Level SCAA for?

The Certificate is designed to educate and inform children aged 13 – 16 and young adults about the social, economic, career and health impacts of alcohol, and the importance of the licensed retail sector to the local and national economy.

What does the qualification cover?

The Certificate covers key subject areas including:
         - what alcohol is and what it does
         - the effects and danger of alcohol
         - alcohol and the law (the Licensing (Scotland) Act 2005)
         - being responsible
         - how the licensed trade contributes to the local and national economy.

What are the key benefits of the BIIAB SCAA?

The Certificate provides a qualification for young people that shows they understand the social and physical effects of alcohol, as well as appreciating the positive aspects of how the licensed retail sector contributes to the local and national economy.

The BIIAB SCAA is a key part of the ‘BII Schools Project’ which provides interactive activities to promote creative and logical thinking, as well as generating family and household involvement.

How long is the training course, where can I take it and how much will it cost?

The time taken to study for the Certificate is completely flexible and will be decided by the school, or BIIAB training centres which will also offer training courses.

There is a short 25 question exam paper combining 10 Yes/No questions and 15 multiple-choice questions.  Those who successfully pass the exam will receive the nationally recognised BIIAB Scottish Certificate in Alcohol Awareness.

The project is part of a community-based scheme and offers sponsorship opportunities for BII members to get more involved with their local schools and raise the positive profile of the industry.

How can the Certificate be taken?

The BIIAB SCAA is supported by an easy-to-follow handbook.  As part of the ‘BII Schools Project’ in addition to the handbook, there is a website which includes on-line activities, plus activity sheets, and newsletters.  The BIIAB SCAA is also available as a free-standing qualification to other candidates in a variety of situations.
