The Team

Denise Thomson, Director 

Denise has over twenty years experience in the education and training sector, having worked in several training providers including a College of Further Education and various awarding organisations, including NCFE, City and Guilds as an External Verifier.

Denise has been employed at BIIAB for over 17 years in a quality assurance capacity with  responsibility for ensuring compliance with Qualification Regulators as such she has devised strategic quality assurance structures within set criteria to improve operational efficiency and customer satisfaction.

Denise is the Responsible Officer at BIIAB.

Gareth Phillips, Commerical Director

Gareth has more than ten years experience in the Work Based Awarding Organisation Market, having worked as the Managing Director of the Hospitality Awarding Body, prior to the sale to City & Guilds; the Sales and Strategy Director at EDI prior to the sale to Pearson, and now at the BIIAB. Responsibilities have included all aspects of an AO, including Qualification Development, Sales and Marketing, Operations and Customer Service, and has a strong understanding of working with Regulators and Government Agencies.

Has always been customer service driven, and has improved service to new levels throughout our industry. Provided focus on the Quality Assurance process within Centres to improve efficiencies and the quality of delivery. Created leadership in Employer engagement for over a decade and has worked collaboratively in the tripartite arrangement of Providers, Employers and an AO.

Leading on solutions for WBL Providers for the new Apprenticeship Standards and End Point Assessments. BIIAB are in the process to be approved as an End Point Assessment Organisation.

Will continue to lead on innovative approaches within our markets to further improve on quality and to establish the BIIAB as the AO of choice within the work based learning sector.

Oliver Taylor, Head of Qualifications

Oliver has over twenty years’ experience across the education and training sector having worked in many different roles for several Awarding Organisations, including the Hospitality Awarding Body and City & Guilds and also as an independent Education and Training Consultant.

Oliver has worked with the BIIAB for over 3 years, and leads the Qualifications team to ensure that all qualifications are valid and fit for purpose.

Oliver’s main responsibility is leading and managing the development of the new Apprenticeship End Point Assessments.

Sally Power, Commercial Manager

Sally has worked in the vocational education market for more than twenty years in variety of senior, customer focussed roles, including the Sector Skills Council, Lantra and Work based Awarding Organisations EDI, Pearson Education Ltd, before joining BIIAB.  

An experienced, forward thinking and commercially focussed individual, Sally has been successful in developing and implementing strategies to improve the customer experience, operational performance and the regulatory compliance in the organisations in which she has worked.   

Her experience covers all functions of an Awarding Organisation from supporting the Responsible Officer and managing relationships with Key Stakeholders to managing the development, operation and sales support for qualifications and assessments.

Sally leads the work which has enabled BIIAB to be approved on the Register of Apprentice Assessment Organisations. 

James Wingerath, Business Development Manager

James Wingerath has 19 years experience working within the Training and Awarding Body Markets including the Hospitality Awarding Body and their sister company Stonebow, EDI, Open College Network South West and FE Associates.  

In the 3 years in which James has worked at BIIAB he has established strong working relationships with Private Training Providers, FE Colleges and Employers.  James has regular update meetings and ensures that agreed milestones are met and ensures that all the areas of the BIIAB team are delivering against the agreed Service Level Agreement including mapping, verification, certification and customer service.

James’s main responsibility is managing BIIAB customers across Private Training Providers, FE Colleges and Employers. 

He can advise all customers on

Richie Phillips, Business Development Manager

Richie has worked in the Work Based Learning sector since 2000. His experience began at an FE College, managing a range of widening participation and work-based learning initiatives. He then spent over ten years managing Independent Training Provider, mainly providing work-based learning for a wide range of clients in the service sector, and also working with partner Colleges on other funded programmes. Richie then spent three years as an Account Manager for an Awarding Organisation, covering the South of England.

Richie’s main responsibility is managing BIIAB customers across Private Training Providers, FE Colleges and Employers.

He can advise all customers on

  • Apprenticeship Frameworks
  • Apprenticeship Standards
  • Apprenticeship End Point Assessments

Paul Humphrey, National Lead EQA

Paul has over twenty years’ experience in education and Work Based Learning, with LCCIEB and EDI, before joining BIIAB in 2014. As the National Lead EQA, he will be the point of contact for several BIIAB Centres.

Paul has been involved in all aspects of external quality assurance, including the creation and implementation of the first holistic approach to external quality assurance; and, designing a multi sector quality assurance approach to external verification. He also played a significant role in the design process, functionality and implementation of the first fully web-based e-portfolio system. Also, experienced in development of qualifications and assessments in the work-based learning sector, ensuring that delivery process is rigorous and quality driven.

 

Paul will work collaboratively with employers and training providers to help implement delivery and assessment methodologies. This will ensure effective and efficient delivery of qualifications, apprenticeship standards and End Point Assessment.

Jane Price, Customer Support Team Leader

Jane has wide ranging experience in customer service and administration roles across a broad range of sectors including logistics, outsourced services, software and telecommunications.

Jane has worked for BIIAB for 3 years and leads the Customer Support Team.  Being well organised and an effective communicator has enabled her to build strong relationships with our Centres and to consistently deliver on our SLA commitments.

Jane leads by example and believes that the key to continuing the successful performance of the Customer Support team is to foster a collaborative environment with a strong work ethic. 

Sharon Eyre, Quality Assurance Executive

Sharon first joined the BIIAB in 1996, working in a variety of roles including Quality Assurance until a break in 2005. Returning to the BIIAB in 2013 Sharon is now responsible for the Quality Assurance surrounding all BIIAB approved centres and supporting the team of BIIAB EQAs. 

Sharon is your first point of call for all queries relating to extending approval, nominated tutors, Reasonable Adjustments and Special Considerations and EQA visits and reports.

Always providing an excellent service to all our customers is very important and Sharon will ensure that your experience as a BIIAB centre is as straightforward, easy and rewarding as possible.
